As New Year’s eve approaches, do you like reflecting and evaluating the past year? Do you like thinking through the upcoming year? Or do you hate the ‘forced’ nature New Year’s resolutions and such? I know there are a lot of different perspectives out there! I wanted to share my own end-of-year habits with you. 

Depending on your personality, you may love to flip the calendar and feel like you have a fresh start. It’s certainly a natural time for tackling goals with renewed vigor. I like to take this time of year to set some new goals and think about what elements of my lifestyle, career, and relationships I want to work on. 

Honestly, this year I feel like I’ll be going full speed through the new year without my usual time of resting and resetting. My husband and I usually go away to the mountains where we recharge, make smores, and hike. This year, we’re staying in town to work and keep tabs on our pending house purchase.

While I’ll miss our usual mountain escape, I’ll still do my annual end-of-year ritual that includes reflections and new year planning. Here are my end-of-year habits, plus one that I am trying for the first time this year. You can try them too if you are so inclined!

  1. I do a personal year review with the FREE workbook by YearCompass that will walk you through a 2019 wrap up and 2020 visioning. It’s fun and free! I’ve done it for a few years now. It does take a chunk of time to sit down and do, but I’ve found it useful. And it’s actually pretty interesting to look back through my old ones!
  2. I make a list of goals for the upcoming year that are a mixture of easy, hard, fun, and chores. This idea came from Gretchen Rubin and her Happier podcast (P.S. I love her concept of the four tendencies!). Gretchen and her sister both make yearly lists that correspond to the year (e.g. 19 for 2019’), and this next year will be ‘20 for 2020’. I had a GREAT time working through my 19 for 2019 list and I can’t wait to make another one for 2020.

What I’m trying for the first time:

  1. Marie Forleo has a series of videos (I watched them on Instagram) for a ‘decade in review‘ reflection. I know some folks dislike how this end-of-decade moment is being amplified and made into a big deal when it’s just another flip of the calendar. But it IS kind of wild to think how much has changed in the past 10 years (for me, anyway!).
